Ag Olympics, tours of Iowa's leading agribusinesses, leadership and career development workshops, networking with Alpha Zeta alumni and fellowship with other AZ from across the country highlighted the National Agricultural Leadership Conference and 49th Biennial Alpha Zeta Conclave April 7-9. California Eta to be installed as newest chapter
The Conclave voted unanimously to install the California Eta Colony at California State University - Chico
as the 74th Alpha Zeta Chapter. Five Cal Eta members and their advisor, Pat Berends, were present at the NALC & Conclave. Stay tuned to the Alpha Zeta Web site for more information about when the installation will take place.
Townshend wins Founders' Cup
Despite tough competition from the Cook and California Delta Chapters, the original remains the best. Thanks to a solid year of scholastic, service and social activities, as well as good communication with the national office, the Townshend Chapter at Ohio State University was awarded the Founders' Cup as Chapter of the Year.
Donors recognized at banquet
Wayne Rindone (Morrill, '69), Robert McCorkle (Cal Delta, '59), Steve Drake (Townshend, '64), Neil Van Sloun (Montana, '57), Patricia Orlowitz (Kedzie, '78), Richard Angus (LaGrange, '52) and Chris Rufer (Cal Delta, '73) were honored during the NALC and Conclave for making contributions of more than $500 to the Alpha Zeta Foundation.
Four chapters take home Middaugh Awards
Cornell and Cook each received two awards. Kansas and California Eta were also honored with Middaugh Awards for chapter activities.
Wilson Chancellor honored as Officer of the Year
Jason Haegele went above and beyond as chancellor of the Wilson Chapter. He was chair of the conference coordinating committee and helped to make this year's NALC and Conclave one of the best in recent history.
Goodell receives scribe award
Nathan Goodell (Townshend) received Officer of the Year recognition for his role as Scribe of the Townshend Chapter. His organizational skills aided the chapter with the planning and execution of the college's career expo.
Cornell Advisor awarded Advisor of the Year
Dr. Peter Davies, a plant science professor at Cornell University, received the second annual Advisor of the Year award for his work with the Cornell Chapter. "He is consistently involved in the day-to-day activities of the fraternity," said Arun Mohan. "He goes above and beyond the duties of an advisor.
New High Council members elected
Jennifer Dierkes (Illinois Beta, '03), Jennifer Woodward-Greene (Maryland, '90), Eryn Cramer (Oregon, '03), Weston McCorkle (North Carolina, '90) and Paul Ruszkiewicz (Cornell, '96) join current board members Jonathan Kui (Cornell, '01) and Dick Steffen (Illinois Delta, '85).
Three honorary members tapped at Conclave
Bernie Staller, retired Chief Operations Office of the National FFA Organizations, former Elanco executive Don Hecht and Iowa State Associate Dean David Acker were initiated into Alpha Zeta on April 9.
Foundation appoints two directors
Bernie Staller and former AZ High Chancellor Paul Jones accepted positions on the Alpha Zeta Foundation Board of Directors Sunday, April 10. Both bring a depth of experience and knowledge to the Foundation.
Conclave accepts chapter name change
Citing the need to better align itself with the Auburn University, the Alabama Chapter formally changed its name to the Auburn Chapter. The change will take effect September 1.
Cook takes banner honors
The Cook Chapter at Rutgers University won bragging rights with the best banner at the conference. The banner contest has become an popular and growing annual tradition. This year featured banners from Townshend, Cornell, North Carolina, Florida, Auburn and Cook.
California hear we come!
Join Alpha Zeta next March at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The National Agricultural Leadership Conference will be held in March with the date to be announced. The theme for the 2006 NALC will carry over the theme from this year and emphasize California's history of irrigation: "Watering the Seed of Tomorrow's Agricultural Leaders."
